Chapter 8
When I arrived back at the cottage, I downloaded the pages Iâd photographed and then enlarged them. Sure enough, according to the coroner, Cammy had drowned, and while there was damage to the corpse after being tossed around on the rocks at the bottom of the bluff, it appeared as if Cammy had drowned and then washed ashore rather than having died as a result of the fall. The news seemed too important not to share, so I decided to head next door to see if Jemma and Josie were around. Jemma worked from home, so was around quite often, but Josie was most likely at work.
âAinsley,â Jemma greeted after answering the door. âCome in.â
I took a step inside. âI know youâre probably busy, but I found out some information about Cammyâs death that I wanted to share with someone.â
Jemma led me into the living room and indicated that I should take a seat on the sofa. âWhat sort of information?â she asked.
âI stopped by Deputy Toddâs office to tell him about my conversation with Cammy on the night she died, and I noticed a file from the coroner on his desk. I donât know why he had a hard copy rather than an electronic copy, but he did. Anyway, I managed to get him out of the office for a few minutes, which gave me time to photograph the document. It turns out that the official cause of death for Cammy wasnât trauma caused by a fall from the bluff onto the rocks below, but drowning.â
Her brow shot up. âDrowning? Are you sure?â
âI have the file downloaded on my phone if you want to take a look at it.â
âYeah, I do. Email it to me.â
I did as she asked, and she pulled it up on her laptop.
âWell, will you look at that,â Jemma said, reading the report. âNo drugs or alcohol were found in her system, which is somewhat surprising since sheâd been to a party. And while she did have a few fractures, the coroner determined that she drowned and her body washed up on shore at some point after that.â She looked up at me. âIâd say this changes things quite a lot.â
âI thought so.â
She frowned. âHow exactly did you get this information again?â
I described my visit to the deputy and my crying jag in more detail.
Jemma laughed. âWow, I guess I should have realized youâd come in handy. You did say you were a PI before coming here.â
I nodded. âI went into the business to help my dad and to keep an eye on him and make sure he didnât overdo it. Itâs not like being a PI was my dream, but I learned a lot in the three years I worked with my father, who was a darn good detective.â I glanced at the file Iâd sent Jemma. âSo, what should we do with this information?â
âIâm not sure. Itâs not like we can contact the sheriffâs office and call them out on the information they clearly have but arenât making public.
